Using the Metronome
I'm a metronome. CLICK ME! (there's an app for that)
Wait, what's a metronome?
It's a practice tool that provides a steady pulse (or beat) to help musicians play rhythms accurately. The pulses are measured in beats-per-minute (BPM).

A metronome can be thought of as your "practice coach". Click the metronome above to be brought to a site where you can use the metronome to keep a steady rhythm while you practice. If you start at a slow speed (maybe 50 BPM), it'll force you to keep a steady beat as you practice a difficult section. Once you've got a handle on the "slow motion" speed, start gradually kicking it up: 55...60...65...70. You'll barely notice that you're getting faster, but after a few days, you'll be up to real speed!!
Remember! - listening to recordings can sometimes help you improve more than playing your instrument. If you understand how the piece is supposed to sound overall, and you know where your part fits in with the larger group, you understand better how to play your music.
